Lloyd's of London

Working with the risk team in both 2019 and 2020 on their yearly internal stress test on hurricane activity, including a first-pass climate stress test

NERC Knowledge Exchange Work: Flood-Wind Correlation

Research leading to production of paper on flood/wind correlation across simulation windstorm seasons in the UK and NW Europe with John Hillier of Loughborough University

World Bank: Mozambique Hurricane Model Evaluation

Brought in as an external consultant to provide an independent evaluation of a hurricane model submitted by an external vendor

Europe Windstorm Model Validation - Aon Benfield Impact Forecasting

Model evaluation of European windstorm model to culminate in a report highlighting areas of concern and strengths, also recommending areas for deep-dive analysis to understand model better.

Medium Term View of Hurricane Risk - SCOR

Technical advisor in the assessment and recommendations regarding adoption of the RMS v17 Medium Term View of Risk. Literature review of the latest science, critique of retrospective forecasts, critique of MTR methodology.

Internal Model Evaluation - CCRIF

Won tender to provide CCRIF an independent external model evaluation of their Caribbean and Central American Hurricane and Storm Surge model. Provided report to be used in external discussions with re/insurers and internal guidance to model-builders.

Wind - Flood Correlation - XL Catlin

Using existing catastrophe modelling event sets to estimate potential exposure to US-Hurricane-driven flood events

Hurricane Steering - Chaucer

Understanding the potential change in steering currents of hurricanes over history

Catastrophe Modelling

Hiscox: Group Head of Catastrophe Research - Aug 2012-Aug 2016

In charge of both internal research and catastrophe model evaluation as well as external research collaborations with academia. Responsible with overseeing, development and quarterly reporting to senior management of recommendations regarding the "Hiscox View of Risk".

Involvement with Lloyds Tercentenary Research Fund, Lighthill Risk Network, OASIS Open Source modelling framework and NERC "PURE" uncertainty working group.

Renaissance Reinsurance: AVP, Risk Manager - Feb 2010-Aug 2012

Model evaluation and internal model development for the group. Management of D&F analysts in London syndicate. Regular collaboration with the Renaissnace Re WeatherPredict meteorologists.

Aon Benfield: Model Evaluation Team Leader - Oct 2008-Mar 2010

Following Aon's buy-out of Benfield, in charge of co-ordinating and developing the validation/evaluation of vendor (RMS, AIR, EQE) models.

Benfield: Natural Hazards Analyst - Oct 2006-Oct 2008

Client-facing role in charge of European Wind model evaluation/validation as well as UK and Nordic renewal modelling plus Japan Typhoon and US Hurricane-related work.

Risk Management Solutions: Principal Research Meteorologist - Jan 2005-Oct 2006

As part of RMS' Research Group, responsible for the technical content of RMS' Cat Updates as well as researching into the atmospheric conditions that lead to specific properties of damaging windstorms and the initial phase of development of Numerical Weather Prediction in the RiskLink v6.0 windstorm model

Risk Management Solutions: Senior Catastrophe Analyst - Dec 2000-Dec 2005

As part of RMS' Research Group, responsible for the technical content of RMS' Cat Updates as well as researching into the atmospheric conditions that lead to specific properties of damaging windstorms and the initial phase of development of Numerical Weather Prediction in the RiskLink v6.0 windstorm model

Academic Work

Visiting Research Fellow: Department of Meteorology, University of Reading: 2016-current

Using climate model output to create simple but instructive datasets to help understand the time-varying baseline of risk.

Honorary Research Associate: UCL Hazards Research Centre: 2009-2012

Research into understanding the efficacy of numerical downscaling in helping to understand severity of windstorm risk. Presented findings at NCAS/NCAR WRF workshop in Cambridge during this period (see attached .pdf)

Post-Doctoral Research Associate: University of Reading / Met Office: 2000-2001

Evaluation numerical model performance by validation against observations from vertically-pointing wind profilers in the United Kingdom. Highlighted the poor performance of the models during Windstorm Lothar.

PhD Meteorology: University of Reading 1996-1999

Research surrounding the processes involved with the development of extra-tropical cyclones using analysis of air trajectories and the development of diagnostics pertinent to the how unstable the atmosphere is during the development of frontal systems within extratropical cyclones (see attached .pdf)
